Survivor Island Project
AP Lang Fall 2018
Dr. Gingrich
You are part of a group of students (you can make up an organization that you are part of within the student body-cheerleaders, lacrosse team, country punk band, robotics team etc.) who are on a school trip. The field trip is on a chartered plane with just a pilot, the club sponsor/chaperone-- an antediluvian, Quixotic teacher-and yourselves. The trip takes you on a journey across an ocean (you can choose your body of water) to a country (you can choose your country) for a competition (you may choose your competition). A sudden storm occurs, knocking your plane off course. The plane's engines are blown out, sending the plane crashing into the ocean waves, killing the pilot and tossing you and your colleagues into the water, where the tide drives you to the shores of an uncharted island. From the beach your team gasps in horror as the plane sinks with the sponsor and the pilot going to the bottom of the ocean. Some boxes of salvage float to shore along with you and a few of your classmates.
"I'm off to find the island of the Lotus Eaters."
Moments later you watch as the plane with its passenger is swallowed by the unforgiving ocean's depths.
Within your group fulfill the following tasks.
1. Describe the setting of your island. You may select whatever climate you choose. The island has some vegetation, water sources, and animal life. The animal and vegetation types are up to your group deliberation. The island is uninhabited and apparently, undiscovered. It does not occur on any map, is not on any shipping lane, and no planes fly by. There is no hope for rescue in the near future. Draw a map of the island itself including terrain, coast line, key points of interest or use etc.
2. Each member is allowed to select three items which cannot cost more than $1000 total which they would have had on the plane and been able to recover from the plane before it sinks to the ocean's floor. None of the products that you use can have power (electric, battery, gas etc). These items should be selected for maximum survival benefit. Consult the web pages for items. You cannot use items that are not for sale within the web catalogues. You have the basic clothing that you wear everyday (special items spear gun, compass will count as part of your three items). Explain each item that you selected, why you selected it, and how it will help you survive in this climate. Give the cost for each item and where you would purchase it. You must purchase it from the seven web pages to the right.
This can be made as a list, bullet points for each person. (Dr. Gingrich does not endorse the politics or products of any of these companies, this is just for the purposes of this activity)

3.Narrate what would happen on the first day. How would you organize yourselves? What would you set up? How would you govern yourselves--make decisions? What would be the priorities that you would create to survive? Write this out as a narrative. Explain how you solved the problem.
4. Based on parts 1, 2, and 3 above how long do you think your group will survive (you have abandoned all hope of being rescued). Write as a paragraph. Parts 3 and 4 should be about one to two pages written. (post parts 3 and 4 to google classroom, one per group with all of your group member's names on it).
