May the Force Be With You
In 1977, George Lucas who had previously gained fame by directing American Graffiti in 1973, directed what would be come the highest grossing film in movie history, Star Wars. Prior to this, science fiction had often been the realm of B movies which had done relatively poorly at the box office and received limited critical attention. This film drastically altered the popular culture landscape and resulted in five sequels, prequels, unlimited graphic novels, novels, television shows, and rides at amusement parks. There are plans for an additional three movies beginning in 2015. Why has this been such a phenomena? What has sparked one of the most fanatic audience basis in history? How does Star Wars explore mythological archetypes of the past and create a new mythology? We explore this questions as well as creating original works of fan response as part of the Star Wars expanded universe.
